Itchy ears / Otitis externa
Itchiness of the ears may be caused by skin conditions such as eczema or from irritation to sensitive skin of the ear canal. Itching can lead to scratches in the ear canal skin which can then cause infection. Otitis externa refers to any cause of inflammation (swelling, redness, discharge) of the ear canal, including bacterial or fungal infection, eczema or irritation from water (‘swimmers ear’). It is important to find out the underlying cause as well as treating any infection with appropriate topical ear drops.
There are useful products which help with itchy ears such as Ear Calm, as well as steroid-based topical treatments which can be discussed with your ENT Consultant.
