Acute Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis is very common and typically caused by a viral infection. The symptoms include nasal blockage or congestion, nasal discharge which may have an abnormal colour, post nasal drip, facial pain or pressure, reduced sense of smell or taste, and cough. Acute sinusitis typically resolves on its own over the course of a week or two, although treatments such as pain killers, steroid nasal sprays or drops and salt water washes can help to alleviate symptoms. In some cases, when symptoms persist or you develop a high temperature, antibiotic tablets can be prescribed. If symptoms of acute sinusitis persist or worsen despite initial treatment it would be important to seek medical assessment.
