Tinnitus
Tinnitus is described as a ‘hallucination of sound’ and can sometimes be described as a buzzing or ringing sound in one or both ears, but can be any type of sound. It can be very intrusive and debilitating, affecting sleep as well as the ability to communicate and concentrate during the day. Some patients hear their own pulse in their ear (pulsatile tinnitus). Tinnitus can happen on its own, but can also occur in relation to other ear-related symptoms and conditions. It can also be related to some non-ENT medical conditions (eg high blood pressure) or can be a side-effect of some medication.
Tinnitus can often be related to hearing loss, and treatment may be directed at improving the hearing. Investigations may be required including a local audiology hearing test, and a scan of the ear and brain in some cases.
Your ENT consultant will support you with finding ways to cope with the tinnitus you experience and minimise it as much as possible.
